FAQ Consult A Doctor™

How does Consult A Doctor™ diagnose my medical problem over the phone?

Unlike informational-based services and Nurse Lines, Consult A Doctor™ has a prior relationship with the member/patient. Therefore, Consult A Doctor™ physicians actually diagnose your illness, recommend a therapy, and if appropriate, prescribe medication. Consult A Doctor™ has been able to satisfactorily resolve over 90% of the calls for medical care.

Do I have to leave work to see the doctor?

No. The doctor comes to you via telephone anytime 24/7.

Can members get prescriptions filled from Consult A Doctor™ physicians?

Yes. This is one of the great benefits of Consult A Doctor™. Because Consult A Doctor™ has a prior relationship with the patient:

Are there any limitations on what the doctors prescribe?

If you are concerned about a specific drug, we can escalate your call and have someone contact you before scheduling a consult. Each consult is unique; therefore, the doctor is the one who decides whether or not to prescribe medication. Consult A Doctor™ offers prescriptions for a wide range of products that deliver direct medicinal value. These include, but are not limited to, drug classes like antibiotics and antihistamines. Acute prescriptions and convenience refills may also be obtained in cases where a member is in transition to a new insurance plan or doctor.

Does the doctor review the member’s medical history before performing a consult?

Yes. The medical history disclosure is stored on Consult A Doctor™’s HIPAA compliant, encrypted central server. Before calling the patient, the doctor reviews the medical history with specific focus on chronic illnesses, current medications, allergies and any changes in the patient’s medical condition since the last contact.

How quickly can I talk to a doctor?

In all cases a physician will call you back within 3 hours. When you call the Consult A Doctor™ 800 number, our call center representative will request your medical consult with a Consult A Doctor™ physician currently on call. Our average call back time is less than 30 minutes, but all calls will be answered within 3 hours or the consult is free.

How often can I call the doctor?

Call anytime you don’t have access to your primary care physician. Your membership allows you to call any time you have a medical issue.

I have pre-existing conditions that make it difficult for me to get insurance. Can Consult A Doctor™ help me?

Yes. Consult A Doctor™ accepts patients with pre-existing conditions. These members pay the same monthly membership fee and doctor consult fees as everyone else. There is NO extra charge for patients with pre-existing conditions.

How does joining Consult A Doctor™ affect my health insurance?

This service is unrelated to your medical insurance. Consult A Doctor™ is NOT insurance. Rather, it is a new value-added medical benefit, designed for today’s family, which complements your current coverage. Though the Consult A Doctor™ consult fee is comparable to the price of a co-pay, you must check with your health plan to see if it is a covered expense.

The Consult A Doctor™ claim form can be submitted and applied against your deductible if applicable. Also, the price of a Consult A Doctor™ consult is a qualified expense that can be paid for with your HSA, FSA or HRA account.
